Cytokines

Non-antibody proteins secreted by inflammatory leukocytes and some non-leukocytic cells, that act as intercellular mediators. They differ from classical hormones in that they are produced by a number of tissue or cell types rather than by specialized glands. They generally act locally in a paracrine or autocrine rather than endocrine manner.

01/01/2023 - "Extensive research is in progress now via multinational consortia relating to the specific type(s) of inflammation involved, whether age and prior febrile illness affect this, and whether measuring and following serum and/or CSF cytokines can help determine the best treatment."
02/01/2021 - "Although no specific patterns of cytokine level alteration could be identified, significantly attenuated plasma levels of inflammation markers were observed in one particular patient who happened to have normalized spleen size and most remarkable reduction in JAK2 mutant allele burden, indicating all-around improvement in every aspect of this case. "
01/01/2020 - "CONCLUSION & INFERENCES: Bipolar stimulation for 1 hour daily using intermittent 5 Hz parameters is most effective in improving colonic inflammation in TNBS-treated rats by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines via the modulation of the autonomic function."
01/01/2017 - "Our results suggest that primary human small airway lung epithelial cells (SAECS) exposed to HTS in the presence and absence of a strong pro-inflammatory stimulus exhibit very distinct effects on cellular response, where HTS is highly effective in attenuating cytokine-induced pro-inflammatory responses via mechanisms that involve transcriptional regulation of inflammation which is cell type and stimulus specific. 5. Sepsis (Septicemia)
11/09/2020 - "Our data suggest that MAIT cells are highly activated and become dysfunctional during clinical sepsis, and contribute to tissue-specific cytokine responses that are protective against mortality during experimental sepsis."
08/19/2020 - "The results indicated that LL-37 exhibits multiple protective actions on septic mice; firstly, the survival of CLP mice was found to be improved by LL-37 by the suppression of the macrophage pyroptosis that induces the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as IL-1β) and augments inflammatory reactions in sepsis; secondly, the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which have potent bactericidal activity, is enhanced by LL-37, and protects mice from CLP-induced sepsis; thirdly, LL-37 stimulates neutrophils to release antimicrobial microvesicles (ectosomes), which improve the pathological condition of sepsis. "
12/01/2017 - "These data suggest that Ecballium elaterium contains some components that exert protective effects against SAE in part by attenuating accumulation of proinflammatory cytokines, which may be important contributors to its anti-inflammatory effects during sepsis."
