Hysterectomy in the Paraplegic Patient

Abstract
The paraplegic woman presents gynecologic challenges not commonly encountered in the general population. When conservative medical therapies for gynecologic disease have failed, the surgical evaluation and peri-operative considerations demand extra attention by the gynecologist and the health care team. These include patient hygiene, anesthesia, patient positioning for surgery, prophylaxis regimens for the prevention of infection, deep vein thrombosis, hormone replacement therapy, and other complications. This case report and review of the meager medical literature covers the pertinent aspects of care in these patients.
