Polyether Toxins

Polycyclic polyether polyketides most often produced by marine organisms, e.g., DINOFLAGELLATES. Many polyether marine toxins are ionophores and neurotoxins and responsible for seafood poisoning.

01/01/2002 - "Ciguatera fish poisoning arises from consumption of any of the 400 species of tropical marine reef fish containing polyether toxins. "
01/01/2016 - "The ability to rapidly identify polyether toxins produced by Gambierdiscus spp. in culture has the potential to distinguish ciguatoxin-producing species prior to large-scale culture and in naturally occurring blooms of Gambierdiscus and Fukuyoa spp. Our results have implications for the evaluation of ciguatera risk associated with Gambierdiscus and related species."
12/01/2014 - "Microalgae belonging to the family of flagellate protists, in particular dinoflagellates, secrete a variety of high-molecular-weight polyether toxins that accumulate through the marine food chain to cause disease in humans by acting as sodium channel activator toxins; ciguatera is the most frequent seafood-borne illness worldwide with 50,000 to 500,000 global incidences per annum and is usually limited to endemic areas located between 35° northern and 35° southern latitude. "
07/15/2010 - "Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is a human foodborne intoxication caused by ingestion of tropical fishes contaminated with the potent polyether toxins known as ciguatoxins (CTXs). "
01/01/1999 - "The aim of the present review was to collect the main observations reported until now concerning the cardio-circulatory effects of polyether toxins, called ciguatoxins, which are involved in an endemic intoxication named ciguatera found in tropical and subtropical countries. "
